A reading experience doesn’t always have to be comfortable, but it should be consistent, she says. Privilege disclaimers can really break up that consistency and put the author in a defensive posture, and maybe there’s a way that it can be done well, but I haven’t seen it. If your acknowledgement of your privilege isn’t already ked into what you’re saying, then I don’t know that tacking it on in order to head off Twitter criticism or what have you is beneficial to the reader. The popularity of the privilege disclaimer is definitely a departure from the days when Rudyard Kipling and his peers surveyed the world around them from a decidedly colonialist perspective without seeming to question how their own identities and views informed their writing, and authors should be commended for creating work that is not, as Melissa Febos puts it, “asleep to its own biases.” Still, maybe there’s a way to acknowledge privilege without approaching the reader from a defensive crouch. Hopefully, the current or next generation of essayists, novelists and memoirists will be successful in finding that lance.
