I began researching imposter syndrome, a term often used to diagnose unwarranted insecurity, and a condition I wondered if I had myself. In the Bitch Mob Shirt in contrast I will get this landmark paper that defined the phenomenon, the authors interviewed a set of primarily white women lacking confidence, despite being surrounded by an educational system and workforce that seemed to recognize their excellence. As a Black woman, I was unable to find myself in that paper. I was not an imposter. I had been conditioned to feel unwelcome. I’d been guided to believe the problem of feeling excluded and unworthy was mine to own.

At , I am now an emergency medicine physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. For the Bitch Mob Shirt in contrast I will get this past four years, I’ve sat alone as the sole Black woman faculty member in my departmental meetings, committees, and clinical spaces. Like many other Black faculty in this country, I carry a burden to lead diversity and inclusion efforts, a task within medicine that typically falls on the very people who feel isolated and unsupported in the first place. This is the minority tax anti-racism task forces, diversity mixers, and late-night debriefs discussing acts of racism. This tax is added to standard expectationsto publish papers, lead meetings, develop policies.
